A Beach Surgery narrative performed in the traditional Korean pansori form — a solo vocalist accompanied by a single drummer whose role is both rhythmic accompaniment and narrative commentary. Pansori is characterized by epic length, emotional intensity, and improvisational responsiveness: the vocalist shapes the story night by night, and the drummer punctuates and questions, creating a dynamic duet.
In pansori adaptation of Beach Surgery, Leif becomes a wandering soldier returning from a nameless conflict; Katita is a healer-shaman whose red First-aid kit is reframed as traditional indigo and crimson textile dyes. The glitch — the story's structural irreparability — translates seamlessly into pansori's form: the vocalist is not bound to a fixed text. Each performance can loop, digress, alter the sequence of events, or end differently. This liberty mirrors the cycle's own refusal of closure.
The tradition emphasizes emotional resonance (in Korean, mok — the voice's inner character — and shimcheong, the listener's sympathetic response). Performers reportedly employ the pansori heunggeokbae (moment of emotional crescendo) during Katita's decision to "break the cycle" (Ch.6 climax), sustaining the tension across multiple retellings.
Documented performances began circulating in Seoul (2019–2020); a 2023 Gwangju iteration by the ██ collective received critical attention for its use of traditional twelve-beat jangdan (rhythmic framework) to structure Leif's three injuries. International tours have brought the form to Dakar, Accra, and Tbilisi, often adapted to local drumming traditions.
Bootleg recordings and unauthorized derivatives are widespread; some versions integrate pansori with Baul song traditions (India) or griot accompaniment (West Africa).
