Protection in Beach Surgery exists in permanent tension with the glitch. Katita constructs her red leather armour not as fortress but as surgical refusal — a boundary between body and temptation. Yet in Chapter 5, the narrator reveals: there is secretly enough leather for a dozen suits. This surplus is not hoarding. It is the material archive of recurring cycles, each loop leaving its accumulated skin.
Leif's three injuries — blindness (mystery), immobility (miracle), cardiac arrest (authority) — each represent a form of protection that imprisons. The pacemaker keeps him alive while severing his will from his heartbeat. When Katita removes it, "his heart is stronger," but the wings erupt and he falls. Protection here means offering refusal itself, not preventing harm.
In the frame, protection takes the form of the makeshift surgery out the back of New South Wales — an improvised clinic where the broken are held. This makeshift space is sacred because it remains unfinished, vulnerable, capable of collapse. Protection does not seal; it opens with consent. To protect is to remain incomplete.
