sleep
A fragmentary, pre-2020 audio work of uncertain origin and authorship, consisting of unmarked cassette tapes circulated through Australian underground networks in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Each tape is a **meditation or sleep-induction sequence**—prolonged, modulated drone interspersed with barely audible whispered text, as if recorded during sleep. The whisper narrates a figure in darkness trying to remember something while repeatedly forgetting "which direction" they face.
Recovered fragments suggest the figure moves through darkness (possibly blindfolded) guided by a voice through an unnamed landscape (possibly the underground pool or the radio igloo), while a background frequency hums at approximately 304 Hz—the male spine's resonant pitch according to the novel's metaphysics.
Authorship is disputed. Some believe the tapes predate the novel (composed by an unknown Australian sound artist); others argue they are **retro-causal** work created after 2020 to appear pre-existing. A third theory: they are C. W. Smith's own early drafts or meditation recordings, leaked before publication.
One cassette is marked only with a small red dot. The other bears faint pencil notation: "When you wake, you will have been asleep the whole time."[citation needed]
