story
This article concerns the embedded narrative outline of Beach Surgery—the unfinished tale of Leif and Katita within C. W. Smith's 2020 novel. For the novel itself, see A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight (novel).
The story is the unfinished narrative outline embedded within the 2020 novel: the tale of Leif (military engineer, three temporary injuries) and Katita (nurse-assassin, agent of the cycle) across two days in Newcastle and the red New South Wales interior.
Structurally, the story is complete—six chapters, four scenes each, time-stamped from 10:30pm to 4:30am across two halves. Yet it is unfinishable. The glitch is the irreparable seam between Half One (the city, the rooftop wires, the underground stone swimming pool) and Half Two (the desert interior, the radio igloo, the rocket cart). The narrator has spent 15–18 years trying to join them; they will not compute.
This incompletion is not a draft state but the story's ontological condition. Every adaptation—manga, anime, opera, film, LARP—is an attempt to finish the unfinishable and resolve the glitch, and each finishes it differently. The story succeeds precisely by remaining unresolved; its two halves forever seek their seam. Leif and Katita are instruments of return: they do not escape themselves; they return to the gap and remain there, again and again.
