Adaptation (game)

This article concerns the 2019 video game Adaptation. For the broader concept of adaptation across the franchise, see Adaptation and impossibility.

Adaptation is a 2019 independent visual novel that transforms the adaptation process itself into its subject. The player assumes the role of a "story architect" tasked with resolving the glitch—the unjoinable structural rupture between Half One — Newcastle and Half Two — The interior.

The game provides access to both halves and a curated archive of prior adaptations, inviting the player to chart a narrative path that reconciles their contradictions. Its signature mechanic is deliberate unresolvability: no player solution is correct. Each playthrough accumulates the player's choices into a unique archive; upon completion, the player writes a personal final chapter (~500 words), compiled into a public database ensuring no two players experience identical conclusions.

Developers describe the design as "formalizing the franchise's central axiom: every adaptation finishes it differently." The game thus elevates narrative failure into procedural inevitability, making the glitch not a problem to solve but a structural principle to explore.

Critical reception emphasizes its philosophy of unfinishability over mechanical gameplay.
