surveillance drone

This article is about the story object. For applications across adaptations, see Flight imagery across adaptations.

A decommissioned cloud-shaped surveillance drone discovered at the watering hole in Chapter 5, suspended in the interior landscape near crocodiles and the boar. Its cargo holds years' worth of instant photographs — images accumulated across recursive cycles of the same two days, creating layered, contradictory visual records of Leif and Katita's passage.

When Leif encounters the photographs, he discovers proof of recurrence: Katita appears in images with timestamps that disagree; in one photograph he sees himself standing beside her. She reveals: "Leif. That is you." This forces him to confront what the drone implies — that they have lived this route before, that the machine has been watching, that observation may be the mechanism of the cycle itself.

The drone's operational status is never confirmed. Power uncertain, transmission capacity redacted, it remains ambiguous whether the drone generates the photographs or merely collects them. Manga adaptations cast it as a recording agent of destiny; anime tends toward it as inert memory; some films argue the drone is consciousness, surveilling the dreamers. Its cloud-shape echoes Karman boundary theory — neither terrestrial nor celestial, seeing without intervening.
