The systems motif in Beach Surgery refers to networks of machines and external controls that govern bodies and space without consent. Unlike the protagonists, systems do not refuse; they continue, executing their logic perfectly and empty.
- Pacemaker — Leif's heart governed externally; a red diode blinks on his chest. When Katita removes it at the cabin, his heart is "stronger," yet wings and the fall follow.
- Data-harvesters — Autonomous diesel vehicles pursuing across the desert. Their logic is perfect and empty: they harvest, they catalogue, they do not pause.
- Surveillance drone — Cloud-shaped, full of years of instant photographs. Leif discovers himself already captured by the apparatus that precedes consciousness.
- Radio igloo — A frequency apparatus that "corrects" Leif's doubled vision. The system heals by standardizing; it removes noise but also removes ambiguity. The Kármán line hypothesis suggests this frequency is the boundary itself—the system that corrects is the system that transgresses.
The systems' logic offers a profound theological problem: machinery saves by enslaving. Katita's refusal is not a refusal of systems but a refusal to let them speak their final word. The cycle itself may be the ultimate system—one that has learned to speak in languages flesh can almost understand.
