the 12-word question

The question is never directly quoted in the novel. All known versions originate in adaptations.

The 12-word question is posed by Leif to Katita on the rocket cart in Chapter 6, moments before his flight and catastrophic crash. The novel's narrator explicitly does not quote it. Readers encounter only the narrative statement—Leif asks Katita his twelve-word question—without access to his actual words.

Because the original text withholds the question, each adaptation invents its own. This canonical divergence is central to Surgipelago:

  • The 2015 manga (Vol. 3, Ch. 23) renders it as: “Can you hear the earth rubbing against me?” [1]
  • The 2017 anime (Ep. 12, 19:42) uses: “Do you think we can break the cycle?” [citation needed]
  • The 2019 opera The Karman Reversal expands it into a 12-syllable vocalization without words—a hummed pitch matched to the Karman frequency [2].
  • The video game Operational Impossibilities (2021) allows the player to choose the question from multiple options, generating branching endings [citation needed].

Scholars debate whether the silence is intentional craft or structural necessity—whether the unanswerable question is the glitch, the precise point where the two halves refuse to join.
