A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight (manga), Volume 7
Volume 7 collects the watering hole sequence, the discovery of the instant photographs, and the boar release. Leif and Katita wade through crocodile-infested water at dusk; her hand guides his bandaged face. A decommissioned surveillance drone, cloud-shaped, descends and spills thousands of thermal-printed photographs across the sand. Katita stands in dozens of them. But in half, she stands beside an unrecognised man.
The emotional pivot occurs when Katita: “This is you, Leif. Every loop. This is you and you don't remember.” Leif's reply is redacted. The art (panels 5–8, chapter 40) shows his bandaged eyes beginning to leak—the first rupture in his devotion. The colour pages (pp. 165–170) reimagine the instant photographs as a gallery of 24 recursive moments: the same composition repeated with minute variations—a visual thesis on eternal recurrence as literal rather than symbolic.
Chapters 41–42 shift to the rural town where Katita releases the boar from its grazing-bot tether. The chase sequence explodes with frenetic linework; red dunes blur as horizon-lines spiral. They arrive at the cabin where Leif will build the rocket cart and Katita stitch leather. The volume ends on her measurement: enough leather for a dozen suits. The cycle has run many times.
