the drone with the camera

This article is about the object as it appears in source text and adaptations. For the episode of that name, see Crocodiles and the Drone.

The drone with the camera is a decommissioned cloud-shaped surveillance device Leif and Katita encounter at the watering hole in Chapter 5. Its internal storage holds years of instant photographs — including a portrait of Katita standing beside a man Leif does not recognize. The photograph's caption reads: Leif. That is you.

The object functions within the text as both plot mechanism and master motif. It documents identity slippage (Leif's inability to reconcile his present self with photographic evidence), cyclical recurrence (suggesting the drone has been encountered before), and the novel's thesis that analogy is the only form of cognition. The drone's mechanical eye sees a version of Leif that Leif cannot see.

In adaptations, it appears variously:

The drone's exact age — whether photographs span decades or minutes — remains unspecified, generating significant scholarly speculation. Some readings treat it as evidence that the glitch operates outside conventional time. [citation needed]
