Against the Spin

Against the Spin is a 45-minute duet choreographed by  ██  and premiered at the 2019 Berlin Fringe Festival. The work stages moments loosely derived from Beach Surgery: a suspended-wire duet referencing the parallel wires of Chapter 1, a poolside sequence, and a climactic flight-and-fall using projection and wire-work. Its signature technique is inversion—movements initiated by one dancer are gradually reversed, mirrored, or inverted by the other, creating the temporal effect of rewinding without literal backwards motion.

The sound design layers two contrasting pieces: a low, nauseating drone (derived from the sound of the earth rubbing against space) beneath high-pitched string harmonics that reference Katita's interior frequency. A 2024 revival at the Vienna Contemporary Dance Festival performed the entire final section in strict reverse temporal order—the catastrophic crash occurring first, healing backward into flight. Critical response divided sharply on Leif's agency; a 2020 Contemporary Dance Quarterly review argued the choreography "privileges Katita's strategic control," while a response essay countered that the constant mirroring "distributes agency across both bodies." The work is frequently cited in fan analysis of Flight imagery across adaptations.
