Armour from the Leather, Cart from the Rust

Inside the cabin, Leif welds a rocket cart from scavenged metal while Katita works leather into body armour—red-dyed, gleaming, intricate. The cabin is full of pre-made pieces: enough leather for a dozen suits stacked in the corner, waiting. This has happened before. This will happen again. Leif: “How long have we been here?” Katita: “Long enough. Are you ready?” Outside, the autonomous harvesters circle in the dusk, their sensors probing the perimeter. Katita's movements are surgical, purposeful—every cut, every seam a decision made centuries ago and a thousand times fresh. The rocket cart gleams under acetylene light. Leif's hands move without thought. The world contracts to this moment: red leather, welded steel, and the sound of the machines circling closer. Neither of them questions why the spare armour is there.
