Overview
The Beach Surgery film strand comprises cinematic attempts to finish the glitch through techniques inherent to montage, duration, and visual narrative. Films have largely abandoned the novel's linear two-half structure, instead pursuing temporal inversion (running Chapter 6 backward), dual chronologies (Half One and Half Two interwoven), or radical ellipsis (cutting from wire-crossing directly to the desert interior).
Major approaches
- Temporal reversal: The 2023 Taiwanese adaptation opens with Leif's crash and works backward to the Bolton Street wires—making the cycle visible as a photographic negative.
- Interleaved halves: The Hindi film, 2021 alternates between Katita's triage perspective and Leif's bandaged waking, forcing the viewer to hold both chronologies simultaneously.
- Suture-through-silence: Red Salt (Film, 2020) abandons narrative connection entirely, cutting mid-scene; the glitch becomes a gap the audience must cross without instruction.
Reception
Festival circuits and scholarly discussion have split between works praised for embracing formal impossibility and those criticized for imposing false coherence. The treatment of Kármán resonance as rotoscoped particle effects proved influential. Approximately ██ films remain in production or lost to archival gaps.
