Cartoon
This article concerns an experimental animated work. For the full list of animated and anime adaptations, see A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight (anime). For the live-action scene that inspired this work, see the Mighty Mechas.
Cartoon is an experimental short that isolates the rooftop exoskeleton combat between Katita, Leif, and Mr & Mrs McRae and renders it as an indefinitely repeating loop. The animation style is deliberately crude: thick black outlines, flat colour fields (predominantly red, grey, black), movements that reset and reverse as if the scene is a corrupted GIF caught in perpetual playback. No dialogue. No names. No exit.
The opening 2:30 is stark: two mechanical exoskeletons (geometric frameworks of lines) move in synchronized combat patterns. The figures clash, disengage, reset. The heartbeat soundtrack—recorded and slowed to 32 BPM—provides the only temporal anchor. By 4:00, a third silhouette enters (red-outlined: Katita). The cycle accelerates. The heart-sound doubles, then syncopates, stuttering against itself.
At 8:30, the film glitches catastrophically. Frames jump. Colours invade wrong cells. The image becomes pure optical static—red grain on grey, impossible overlap—for 90 seconds. When the image stabilizes, the scene has reset. But it is not identical. The rooftop is now tilted 5 degrees. The red is deeper, almost carmine. The mechanical figures are positioned differently. The cycle resumes, but transformed.
By 12:00, exoskeletons have multiplied: seven pairs visible, then ten, then the frame cannot contain them. The canvas overflows. Limbs bleed past the edge. The heartbeat—now at 160 BPM—becomes a single compressed tone. At 16:50, the sound ceases abruptly. The final 53 seconds show only shapes, pulsing in silence, until the black fades to absolute null.
Status of original film and animator identity remain redacted in most archives [citation needed]. Distributed primarily through festival circuits and bootleg anime repositories (██████ ); several academic institutions maintain copies in restricted access. Fandom theorizes the "glitch" at 8:30 as an intentional reenactment of the glitch, rendered as animation corruption.
