Chapter 1 (10:30pm→5:30am)
This article documents Chapter 1 of the embedded story Beach Surgery within the novel. For the full chapter structure, see A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight (story).
Chapter 1 opens on the rooftop of Bolton Street car park, where Katita has transported the unconscious Leif — bearing his three temporary injuries: bandaged eyes, paralyzed legs, and external pacemaker. She wheels him across two parallel wires stretched between adjacent buildings to reach an apartment, where she surprises elderly residents Mr & Mrs McRae, who respond by activating their pendant exoskeletons.
An absurdist cartoon-logic battle ensues; Leif fires his hand cannon; the McRaes withdraw. Katita and Leif escape down a twelve-storey stairwell, emerging at street level to a hotdog eatery where they overhear chatter about an impending Protest.
The chapter concludes in an abandoned shopping centre. Katita rakes the dusty floor into geometric patterns — an impromptu zen garden meditation — and contemplates history, truth, and the fractures of language. Both sleep. [citation needed] The sensory and botanical specificity of this dust-garden scene remains interpretively contested; subsequent adaptations have expanded it into full cycles and durational practices.
