hand cannon

This article covers Leif's signature weapon as depicted in Beach Surgery (story) and across adaptations.

The hand cannon is Leif's primary weapon and a recurring symbol of his relationship to agency and the cycle. Described as "massive" in the novel without specification of caliber or origin, the weapon appears in both halves of Beach Surgery, beginning as a defensive tool in Ch. 1's encounter with the Mighty Mechas and persisting through the desert sequences of Half Two.

In canonical text, Leif maintains such a physical bond with the cannon that Katita places it in his lap during the final reset—a gesture suggesting the weapon itself is part of the cycling mechanism rather than mere equipment. The gun's massive, almost totemic nature contrasts sharply with Katita's surgical precision; together they embody the story's central tension between surgery (precision) and beach (chaos).

Across adaptations, the hand cannon has been variously interpreted: as a literal firearm, as a metaphorical prosthetic of Leif's agency, as a relic of his military background, and in some experimental works, as a non-functional sculpture—a gun that cannot shoot. The  ════════  manga interpretation depicts it as a slowly corroding piece of his body, bleeding rust and memory with each cycle. [citation needed]
