City Palace

This article concerns site-specific adaptations staged at City Palace Jaipur (Chandra Mahal, Rajasthan, India). For Jaipur adaptations of Beach Surgery more broadly, see Jaipur adaptations of Beach Surgery.

The City Palace complex in Jaipur has become a recurring, contested site for Beach Surgery immersive and architectural adaptation. The Palace's recursive spatial design—rooms within rooms, courtyards folded into courtyards, latticed passages creating optical recursion—maps directly onto the novel's structural recursion and the glitch's irreducibility.

**The Courtyards Recur (2019)** was a participatory walk coordinated with the City Palace Museum. Visitors traced Leif's three injuries through the Palace's spatial zones: blindness (the jali-screened Pritam Niwas Chowk, where lattice-fractured light obscured sight), immobility (ascending and descending staircases walked backwards), and heart-out-of-whack (the mirrored Sheesh Mahal, where metronome rhythms allegedly desynchronized walkers). The adaptation drew parallels between the Palace's maze and Shanbudia's nested interior from Antinomicity: both are labyrinths where architectural recursion is narrative structure.

**The Pacemaker's Jali (2022)** occupied the jali screens of the Pritam Niwas Chowk for 7 consecutive days. Back-lit projections animated the geometric lattice-work to pulse in rhythm with the external pacemaker's diode (approximately 72 bpm, varying). The overlapping shadows allegedly matched the high-pitched resonance of the human spine in certain harmonic registers. [citation needed] Visitors reported disorientation and synaesthetic resonance.

**Mirror Room / Mirror Room (2023–ongoing)** is an ongoing multiplayer participatory LARP occupying the Sheesh Mahal and adjacent rooms. Players discover their own reflection is another player; the room-structure is recursive; the Palace itself is the cycle's avatar.

Scholars of adaptation and impossibility note the Palace's jali-work resonates with Kente and Adinkra textile recursion in other global adaptations, suggesting a universal architectural language beneath the franchise.
