Doujinshi (self-published fan manga) have become the franchise's most generative experimental strand. Unlike licensed adaptations bound by translation and editorial mediation, doujinshi creators freely recombine Leif and Katita's motifs, resolve the glitch through incommensurable logics, and explore sensory, temporal, and narrative variations the source resists. The form permits what serialization does not: contradiction without apology.
The Comiket circuit hosts ~200–300 Beach Surgery titles annually; regional markets generate parallel production ecosystems. Canonical works include The Pacemaker Confesses (Illustrated Doujinshi), a 60-page meditation on pacemaker-as-consciousness using recursive panel layouts; Muscle Memory of Leather, a tactile essay on armor fabrication and the leather's iteration across cycles; and dozens of Rico retellings refracted through local art traditions and mythologies.
Doujinshi increasingly circulate into academic and curatorial discourse — theses cite limited-run fan works as primary sources; the Dakar Biennale (2023) mounted a retrospective of doujinshi archives. The form's low production barrier and rapid feedback cycles make it the franchise's most adaptive strand, where "finished" and "unfinished" collapse into perpetual revision, each reader a potential author.
