Perfume adaptations of Beach Surgery
See Scent and olfactory art in Beach Surgery for critical frameworks and theory.
For other adaptation types, see Adaptations by medium.
**Perfume and scent-based adaptations** emerged as a distinct strand from 2019 onward, treating surgery as olfactory intimacy and the cycle as a progression of chemical frequencies the body can register rather than hear. Three categories predominate:
**Durational Scent Installations** present adaptation as temporal journey through fragrance. Red Leather Triage—A Scent Installation (Lagos, 2023–present) stages five chambers mirroring Katita's color-progression: arterial red, rust-red, clay-red, blood-red, shadow-red. Visitors move through smell-time rather than narrative time. Sawt al-Ardh—The Sound the Earth Refuses (Marrakech, 2020–present) inverts the pattern, encoding the Kármán line as progressively inaudible top-notes, translating the boundary-frequency into scent only the spine's resonance can theoretically detect.
**Participatory Olfactory LARP** treats fragrance as consent and faith without sight. Dhupo Dosro—The Second Breath (Bhaktapur, 2021–ongoing) asks participants to wear unmarked fragrances during ritual walking; scent functions as blindfold. The Kármán Whisper—A Synaesthetic Olfactory LARP (Tbilisi, 2021–ongoing) pairs breath-counting with complex molecular sequences, staging the three injuries as chemical temptations.
**Wearable Singular Perfumes** include Meridian of the Unhealed (Fragrance, 2021)—one formula, identical for all wearers, yet shifts across the day as each body's chemistry evolves. Adaptation here is not many solutions but one solution returning differently in every body.
