Rivers and waterways in Beach Surgery
Water in Beach Surgery functions simultaneously as threshold, death-marker, baptismal space, and archive. The novel moves from Newcastle's harbour (Half One, urban, coastal) through an underground pool to the desert interior (Half Two), yet water recurs everywhere: as Styx Creek (Dantean crossing), as the public baths' alarm-clock baptism (resurrection), as the watering hole's ancient witness, as the coastal conflict zone where Leif's unfinished backstory begins with a dive.
The structural movement from water to desert is not escape but recursion: city-harbour → rooftop descent → water-fed stone pools → the watering hole → the drone scooping both lovers from water at chapter's end, recycling them back. Water holds memory: the instant photographs the drone has collected include Leif already present in the watering hole, already drowned.
Across adaptations, water recurs as a site of glitch-resolution. Indian river-pilgrimage adaptations (Brahmaputra Frequency Walks, Yamuna installations) stage water as cleansing and eternal return. South African works read the watering hole as communal heal-site. Crocodile Meridian installations position crocodiles as archive-keepers; tidal rhythms become the franchise's hidden pulse.
A misfiled field-recording fragment — possibly from ██ — documents waterside installations with tree-rooted solar transceivers broadcasting at tidal intervals, status unconfirmed. [citation needed]
