Craig Warren Smith (b. 1978) is an Australian author, play theorist and childhood-development researcher best known for the 2020 novel A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight. His primary work explores ontological incompleteness, analogy and the doctrine of return through interconnected narratives featuring recurring Leif and Katita, whom he identifies as "instruments of return" across his full oeuvre.
Smith worked internationally as a UN consultant on urban play ecologies, directing a high-profile workshop in Shanbudia on childhood play in future cities. He is based in Newcastle, New South Wales, the primary setting of his novel's first half. He met his wife—a medical artist and former competitive player—at a Street Fighter II tournament in 2001.
He is completing a triptych: Everyone I Love is Alive in the Unlimited Present of the City and its Waters (2025); Their Most August Public Organ (in progress); and Surplus of the Seen (forthcoming). His essays on failure, consciousness and recursion—particularly Subject (Ontological Incompleteness)—form the philosophical foundation for Surgipelago's global franchise. [citation needed]
