The Dust Garden (manga volume)
This volume covers Chapter 1 (continued) through early Chapter 2 of the original novel. For the complete manga series, see A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight (manga).
The second volume opens with Katita and unconscious Leif descending the twelve-storey stairwell of Bolton Street car park after their confrontation with the McRaes. The opening arc renders the descent as slow, meditative spreads—each landing a new tableau of urban decay. Katita: “It takes time to fall. Do you feel the falling, Leif?” establishes the volume's meditation on recurrence and the one-sided coin.
The central section depicts Katita alone in the shopping centre, raking dust into patterns. The artist renders this in near-silent pages: her hand, the rake, the slow revelation of pattern. The opening narrative note—"the only way a thought can exist is when it mirrors itself against its equivalent"—anchors the visual meditation. Leif remains unconscious on a bench, his shirt the sole color in grey space.
When Dirtheart activists appear as shadowed figures, Katita chooses flight toward the beach. The volume's climax introduces the mechanical seagull as a distant silhouette on the horizon—Chapter 2's harbinger. The final pages shift tone: the city grows smaller. The beach waits.
