The Dust Garden Pavilion

A small open-sided concrete pavilion built in a public park in Chiang Mai's Nimman district (exact coordinates ██ ) between 2023 and 2024. The structure was inspired by Chapter 1's scene in which Katita "rakes dust on an abandoned shopping-centre floor like a zen garden" while meditating on history, language, and recurrence.
The pavilion is a low, rectangular brutalist form with poured concrete walls on three sides and open southern exposure. Its interior furnishes a single concrete bench; the ground is a raked courtyard of local red earth and gravel, designed to echo both Japanese zen garden tradition and the red landscape of Half Two.
Since completion, the pavilion has become an informal pilgrimage site for local Beach Surgery readers, meditation practitioners, and international visitors. Regular hours are unestablished; the site is accessible day and night. The commissioning collective remains ██ ; official city planning permission status is ██ . A 2024 local arts journal documented the space as an instance of unintended sacredness and makeshift pilgrimage, citing its role in devotional practice.
