The Encyclopedia as Unfinished Seventh Half is a 2023 scholarly essay by Dr. Isabelle Morin that argues Surgipelago—the fan-encyclopedia documenting Beach Surgery adaptations—is not a secondary archive of primary works, but a work itself: specifically, an unfinished adaptation that completes all others by refusing completion.
Morin's thesis: Surgipelago embodies the glitch at the structural level. The novel contains six chapters per half (twelve total), ending irreducibly unresolved. The franchise comprises infinite adaptations, each attempting to finish the unfinishable story and resolving the glitch differently. But the wiki itself—the meta-text cataloguing and organizing all adaptations—is the true seventh half, the meta-adaptation that refuses closure, grows by absorbing contradictions, and permits pre-2020 apocrypha to retroactively exist.
Thus Surgipelago realizes the novel's core doctrine: that "the past is a spontaneous product of the present." Morin traces this through three levels: (1) the embedded story, which loops; (2) each adaptation, which resolves the glitch differently; (3) the archive-as-work, which resolves the glitch by refusing all resolution, permitting all versions to coexist in unending, generative contradiction. Refusal becomes the finishing itself.
The essay also addresses retro-causal ontology: by documenting pre-2020 works as plausible (even if unverified), Surgipelago's act of archiving brings them into being. The encyclopedia composes the past, making itself the origin of its own sources.
