The Mercy of Exoskeletons

This episode adapts scenes from Chapter 1 (Bolton Street car park). For the full episode list, see A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight (anime).

Opens with Katita and unconscious Leif on the rooftop of Bolton Street car park. She wheels him across the parallel wires to an apartment. Nearly six minutes pass without dialogue—only ambient drone and breathing.

The elderly McRaes emerge in exoskeletal combat rigs—decades-old pension-funded technology. The animation captures dissonant tone: mechanical whine against soft clink of medications in the kitchen. Mrs. McRae: “We do not want trouble. But we have trained for it, you understand. We have always trained.” The brief fight escalates when Leif's hand cannon fires, shattering a window.

Their descent down twelve storeys is rendered as spiraling camera movement, interspersed with Katita's internal monologue on language as "a game of fictions." They emerge into Newcastle's cool blue-and-purple night streets. The episode closes on neon: a hotdog eatery sign, and a poster advertising the coming Dirtheart protest. In the final frame, shadows of figures gathering in the distance.
