The Rhythm of the Machine

The episode opens on the red diode of Leif's external pacemaker, blinking against red desert scrub. The animation syncs Katita's voice with the device's pulse: Katita: “"Each beat that is not yours is a beat you owe the machine."” The screen fractures into a grid of heartbeats. As they drive through the harvester-haunted plains, the pacemaker's rhythm accelerates, stutters, and fragments into two separate pulses — Leif's own heart fighting against the device. At the radio igloo, the frequency correction causes the pacemaker to emit a low harmonic that splits the air. Leif's breath syncs with the machine, then diverges, then syncs again. Katita's hand trembles as she reaches for the device. Katita: “"If I remove it, your heart will—"” Leif: “"Be mine again. Or it will stop."” The episode dissolves into a rhythm that might be heartbeat or might be the earth's breathing.
