Udaipur is a city in southern Rajasthan, historically the capital of the Mewar kingdom. Situated on Lake Pichola's banks, it is renowned for classical music tradition, Rajasthani miniature painting, devotional temples, and centuries of textile arts.
Within the Beach Surgery franchise, Udaipur has emerged as a site of participatory textile adaptation and informal pilgrimage. The Mahila Mandal, Udaipur has anchored creative engagement since 2018, transforming the city's embroidery traditions into collaborative space for retelling Leif and Katita's story. The collective's work with red thread and cyclical stitch patterns parallels the city's own temporal rhythms—the seasonal filling and emptying of Lake Pichola, the daily raga cycles of classical Hindustani vocal performance, the yearly rotation of Devdasi temple festivals.
Informal devotional walks circumnavigate Lake Pichola, tracing what participants call the "path of the caught descent"—a durational meditation on water, return, and the sound of the earth rubbing against space. The lake's acoustic properties have drawn experimental sound artists exploring the Kármán line frequency boundary. Two Udaipur Biennale exhibitions (2023, 2025) have featured textile and multimedia adaptations from across South Asia and East Africa.
