The novel's glitch—the structural seam that does not compute between Newcastle and the desert—is not a problem awaiting solution but an irreducible gap that each adaptation attempts to bridge differently. Manga resolve it through simultaneity; opera through reincarnation; experimental theatre through refusal of narrative joining. Each solution contradicts the last. This contradiction is intentional.
The novel itself models this: the narrator abandoned the outline after fifteen years, leaving it unfinished. Adaptations resolving the glitch do not solve but multiply the problem.
