The preschool is an abandoned interior location encountered in Chapter 2 during the descent from rooftop toward beach. Located within Newcastle, it functions as a narrative waystation and space of suspension.
The building is unmaintained; small furniture and water-damaged murals remain. Upon entry, Leif and Katita encounter the children—their number and age ambiguous. Leif, bandaged, tells them stories without looking; Katita observes at the margin. The narrator records no story-contents, only that Leif speaks "as though remembering what he could not have seen."
The scene's duration is contested. Though nominally spanning 5:30am to 12:30pm, internal chronology is nonlinear. A Taiwanese film adaptation renders the preschool as temporal paradox—existing within Leif's memory of a future moment. This ambiguity spawned The Preschool Chorus theory: that the children are echoes, or that Leif narrates to an audience displaced in time.
The preschool functions across adaptations as threshold space—neither city nor wilderness, neither waking nor dream—where narrative suspends and Leif's buried voice surfaces.
