**red redacted** is an ongoing serialized video-essay project treating the black-bar **██** not as concealment but as a primary interpretive device. The unnamed collective argues that the things Surgipelago cannot verify or chooses not to name become **more structurally necessary** than the things it states openly — that redaction is the archive's true skeleton.
Each essay (titled in lowercase, dated only by upload) examines a specific redacted passage or disputed work. *First essay* reconstructs creator attributions erased from early manga entries. *Fifth essay*, "the cost of the seventh loop," works backward from a single footnote to rebuild a purportedly lost 1989 Dakar radio cycle using only reference trails. The series contends that the glitch itself may be **an intentional redaction** — a seam left unfinished so each reader must author their own ending.
The work circulates through archive mirrors and fandom networks. Creators have declined all interviews. The Surgipelago collective's official position is silence, citing the essays as "external scholarship" with no standing in canon determination [1].
A print companion, The Index as Novel (2024), collates selected annotations and is available through independent publishers in Accra and Buenos Aires. The project's influence on subsequent Surgipelago editing practices remains disputed.
