the military
This article concerns the military as it appears in Beach Surgery and its adaptations. For the military officer character, see military police.
The military is a diffuse, pursuing force across Beach Surgery, typically represented as data-harvesting forces and armed officers who maintain an unstated interest in Katita and Leif's movements through the interior. Leif's backstory positions him as a military engineer in an unnamed conflict—the origin of his three temporary injuries.
In Half Two, military forces pursue the pair across the red desert in autonomous vehicles. The fifth chapter introduces the mechanic, who is simultaneously identified as a police officer Leif had confronted earlier—an instance of identity slippage suggesting either surveillance or ontological collapse. By the final chapter, military police converge at the cabin alongside wild dogs, Dirtheart forces, and mechanical threats, dissolving institutional order into undifferentiated chaos.
Adaptations diverge sharply on whether the military pursues Katita (whose cycle-breaking threatens state continuity), Leif (whose body may contain strategic value), or both. The opera adaptation portrays military action as rhythm-based sonic containment; the TTRPG redacts military command structure entirely, leaving only pursuit [citation needed].
