In the Beach Surgery universe, unfinished names the irreducible, non-resolvable gap at the heart of both the novel and its entire franchise—the glitch's seam between the two halves of the story that "does not compute."
The novel's narrator has spent 15–18 years tinkering with an outline of Leif and Katita's story that he cannot complete. Rather than a failure of craft, this incompleteness is generative: each adaptation—manga, opera, LARP, installation, thesis—is an attempt to finish the unfinishable, and each finishes it differently. Contradictions between adaptations are canonical, not errors.
Philosophically, unfinished echoes Beckett's refusal to resolve, Hesse's glass bead game (knowledge as ever-recursing play), and Nietzsche's eternal recurrence (the cycle refuses linear progress, closure, transcendence). The coin with one side spins endlessly: there is no final turn, no closure, only spinning.
Katita's refrain—"We can break the cycle we can break the cycle we can"—is not a promise of arrival but an affirmation of endless return. The surgical metaphor holds: surgery is never "finished" in the sense of fully healed; wound-care is iterative, generational, cyclical. The catch is not rescue but embrace of the unrescuable.
For C. W. Smith, unfinished is ontological—the human subject itself is a Möbius gap between thinking and thought, an unsuturable division that language can only circle. Surgipelago itself—this encyclopedia—never closes; every article spawns redacted margins, unanswered red links, and future edits. The archive is the glitch made permanent.
