Chapter 3 (12:30pm–7:30pm)

For the full structure of the novel, see A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight (story).

This chapter closes Half One (Newcastle) and stages the narrative seam that opens Half Two.

Chapter Three finds Leif and Katita in a hidden stone swimming pool fed from the harbour, accessed through a street-art mural that dissolves into water. Swimming through the submerged tunnel toward daylight, a vast mechanical seagull descends—a crane-like sculpture, part-bird, part-scavenging machine. Katita and Leif cut free using the sword and plummet upward, emerging not in the harbour but on the apartment balcony where Half One began. The narrator marks this recursion flatly: "circle of life" intact.

At dusk they reach the beach, and the narrative seams fracture. The scene "dissolves into a desert hospital room." Katita, now in scrubs, addresses an unconscious Leif: “Honey. I know you've just woken up. But. We need to go for a drive.” The glitch has opened. Half One has collapsed into Half Two without explanation; time, location, and causality have become unjoined. The three injuries—bandaged eyes, immobile legs, blinking external pacemaker—remain, but everything else has inverted.

The chapter is the seam itself.
