Dissolve
For the specific narrative moment, see Chapter 3. For temporal paradoxes it generates, see The Glitch as Hermeneutic Necessity.
The dissolve—the soft cinematic join between Newcastle and the desert interior—is where the novel's central structural fault becomes visible as adaptable rather than unbreakable. End of Chapter 3: underwater in the stone pool, Katita and Leif cut free from the seagull and surface on an apartment balcony—then cut to a desert hospital room, Katita in scrubs: "Honey. I know you've just woken up. But. We need to go for a drive."
Film and theatre interpret the dissolve with radically incompatible ontologies. The 2023 Taiwanese film treats it as dream-logic; Brazilian experimental theatre stages it as analepsis (Half Two is flashback); the opera repeats the transition eight times at accelerating speed, each iteration altered. The glitch persists: no adaptation smoothly joins the halves without making a choice about time and causality that other adaptations contradict. The dissolve is the franchise's wound made manifest.
