In Shanbudia's Shadow
This article is about the 2019 manga. For the narrator's frame story, see Shanbudia. For the workshop context, see Empty World Meditations.
A 2019 single-volume manga by ████ that collapses the distinction between the frame—the narrator's UN workshop in the desert city of Shanbudia—and the story itself.
Katita appears not as nurse-assassin but as field medic embedded in the workshop's final day. She observes the narrator—named only "the Eruption"—climbing the conference-center dome in scorching heat. She watches him teaching children impossible games: Empty World Meditations where the city vanishes if they blink. In a single white panel, she comprehends: Beach Surgery was not a story the narrator invented. It is a prescription he received. Katita has engineered the surgical cycle into the workshop's pedagogy, teaching these children the rules of a game they will play eternally.
The final act collapses: Katita's makeshift surgery is the same room as the conference dome. The children are Leif and Katita, replaying their roles. Katita (to child-Leif): “Do you remember? Do you remember doing this before?” The child does not answer. The manga ends with a blank page: a space awaiting the reader's next iteration of the game.
