her makeshift surgery out the back of New South Wales

This article concerns the unnamed facility where Leif is first resuscitated. For other medical spaces in the franchise, see The Recurrence Clinic.

Her makeshift surgery out the back of New South Wales is the unnamed rural medical facility operated by Katita where Leif regains consciousness following his near-fatal rescue of a boy from the water.

Description

The facility exists in a state of ambiguity: the novel's narrator refers to it as a "makeshift surgery," implying temporary or improvised medical infrastructure. Its location—inland from the Newcastle coast, in the rural interior—is never precisely mapped. It contains sufficient medical supplies for extended care, sterile surfaces suitable for surgery, and at minimum one recovery bed.

Katita operates it alone. The dialogue that opens the embedded narrative places Leif already unconscious there, newly awake, with Katita addressing him in a tone suggesting prior medical intervention [1].

Function in adaptations

The facility becomes a blank canvas across adaptations. In the manga, it is a concrete bunker under red desert; in The Karman Transmission (audio), it exists only as Katita's voice coaching Leif through exercises [citation needed]. The Recurrence Clinic (light novel) reimagines it as a hospital building that contains infinite rooms; The Mylar Procedure (2019 film) suggests it may be inside Leif's own body [2].
