McRae

Mr and Mrs McRae are an elderly married couple inhabiting an apartment adjacent to the Bolton Street car park in Newcastle, New South Wales. They appear in Chapter One of *A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight (novel)*, where they mount a mechanical defense against Katita and the unconscious Leif.
The McRaes possess pendant exoskeletons—lightweight mechanical armatures suspended from chains worn around the neck. The narrator refers to these devices colloquially as the Mighty Mechas. They deploy them with practiced coordination, engaging in what the narrative describes as a "cartoon battle" with Leif's hand cannon. The encounter ends without deaths; the couple survives the incursion. [1]
Neither prior relationship between the McRaes and Katita nor the circumstances motivating their mechanical defense are disclosed. Their presence establishes a recurring motif: civilian political conflict and questions surrounding humanoid synthesis in an age of legal revision. [citation needed]
