The stairwell is a twelve-storey vertical descent within Bolton Street Car Park, occurring in Chapter 1 of Beach Surgery, where Leif and Katita flee after their encounter with the McRaes' exoskeletons. The descent is rendered analogically: each storey is reported in identical sentence structure, collapsing temporal and spatial differentiation. Whether this reflects genuine repetition, doubled perception, or narrative collapse remains deliberately ambiguous. [1]
The stairwell recurs across adaptations as a site of cyclical return. Some anime and film versions render the descent as a literal spiral or Möbius loop; others compress it into non-sequential panels, encoding the glitch's narrative impossibility. One disputed 1988 film fragment allegedly shows Katita ascending while Leif descends simultaneously.
Structurally, the stairwell is the point where the first half begins straining toward the second. Adaptations reversing the narrative sequence typically restage the stairwell in ascent, testing whether the cycle's directionality can be altered.
