Newcastle Spiral
This article is about the walking installation. For the city setting, see Newcastle. For the embedded story, see Half One — Newcastle.
A self-guided walking installation spiralling through central Newcastle with painted markers and redacted plaques alluding to locations from Half One — Newcastle: the Bolton Street car park, the concealed path to the underground stone swimming pool, and the sand garden meditation site from Chapter 1.
Each spiral iteration retraces the same streets at different altitudes (staircases, overpasses, descents), so walkers encounter familiar corners repeatedly—materialising eternal recurrence without explanation. The route is asymmetric; no two circuits are identical. A 2019 companion app (now deprecated) overlaid ambient Karman-frequency drone beneath street sounds.
The artist(s) remain unidentified. No official commission is recorded. Rumoured sister installations exist in seven other cities , though Newcastle alone is documented in published guides. [citation needed] Maintenance has been ongoing by anonymous volunteers; the installation appears intact as of ████ . [citation needed]
