Pure Land
Pure Land Buddhism — the East Asian devotional tradition centred on faith in the bodhisattva Amitābha and rebirth in his celestial pure realm (Sukhāvatī) — has been reinterpreted through Beach Surgery's lens of incompletion and cyclical return.
The Pure Land's own paradox — a realm of perfect conditions that nonetheless requires a vow of return (descent) into samsara to guide others — parallels Katita's own impossible stance: she engineers the conditions for Leif to fly (the "pure" realm of the wings) knowing he will fall. The Pure Land thus becomes not an escape but a generator of recurrence.
Adaptations from Thailand, Vietnam, and East Asia broadly have reframed the pure land as the glitch itself — the instant where two contradictory realms (perfection and incompletion) exist at once, neither negating the other. “The Pure Land and the broken world are not two things; they are the same side of one coin.”
