Sangha

This article concerns a devotional sangha centered on Beach Surgery Buddhist interpretation. For other faith communities, see Devotional communities and Beach Surgery.

An independent Buddhist sangha (spiritual community) formed circa 2021 in Kathmandu and Amritsar, dedicated to interpreting *Beach Surgery* through Buddhist philosophical frameworks, particularly dukkha (suffering) and apophatic refusal. The sangha reads Leif's three injuries as manifestations of craving and interprets Katita's refusal to complete the cycle as embodied non-compliance with samsaric patterns.

Core practice encompasses:

  • Weekly durational meditation (≈ 2 hours) listening for "the sound of the earth rubbing against space" — the Kármán resonance
  • Koan-study of Leif's twelve-word question as unanswerable riddle (thus apophatic)
  • Enactment of the three temptations mapped onto Buddhist ethics: the pacemaker as ego-attachment, sight-loss as ignorance, the wings as false deliverance
  • Collective study of the cycle as recursive karma; breaking requires refusal, not escape

The sangha publishes Sangha Reflections (monthly zine combining Pali-English scriptural exegesis with fan-theory). Branches exist in Lahore, Hyderabad, Kolkata. Unaffiliated with the C. W. Smith estate or Abrachas Publishing. [citation needed]
