Bolton Street car park is a real multi-storey structure in Newcastle city centre and the literal opening threshold of the embedded story *Beach Surgery*. Chapter 1 begins: “Rooftop of Bolton Street car park. Katita wheels the unconscious Leif across two parallel wires to an apartment.”
**Geography & architecture.** The car park's rooftop serves as a liminal space—neither city nor sky—where Leif's two-day ordeal commences. The "two parallel wires" that Katita uses to traverse to an adjacent building suggest tightrope-walking and echo the story's recurrent motif of the coin with one side—two edges forming one continuous surface. The rooftop is also where Leif and Katita first encounter the McRaes in their pendant exoskeletons, resulting in a "cartoon battle." The stairwell descent from this rooftop (Chapter 1, scene 2) becomes a recurring symbolic motif of descent and evasion.
**Threshold function.** As the story's entry-point, the car park marks the transition from unconsciousness to narrative, and from the frame (the narrator's real testament) into the embedded outline of Beach Surgery itself. Many adaptations fixate on this location—the Bolton Street Walk is a participatory audio-locative tour through Newcastle that traces the Chapter 1 route; the anime renders it as a brutalist monument; Polish Radio versions transmit from an imagined radio station in its basement.
**In adaptation.** A 2023 immersive theatre piece, *The Wires Above Bolton Street*, physically remade the rooftop using LED wire installations on the Newcastle Entertainment Centre roof, allowing audiences to traverse identical "wires" as Katita. Eastern European and Middle Eastern adaptations often relocate the scene to their own capital cities' car parks, treating Bolton Street as an archetypal threshold rather than a specific place.
