the McRae

The McRae are an elderly couple residing in an apartment accessible via the parallel wires atop Bolton Street car park. They appear in Chapter 1 of Half One — Newcastle as Katita and the unconscious Leif attempt passage across the rooftop.
The novel describes them as deploying pendant mechanical exoskeletons — the Mighty Mechas — which operate as inverted aging. Where Leif's three injuries render him temporally suspended (blindness, immobility, externalized heart), the McRae's exoskeletons render them mechanically vigorous: they move with hydraulic precision, as though age has been surgically relocated into apparatus.
A "cartoon battle" ensues. Leif fires his hand cannon at the exoskeletons (producing "sparks and a sound like cutlery in a disposal"); the McRae pursue the pair through their apartment and down the 12-storey stairwell to street level. Whether the McRae intend injury or enact hospitality-through-combat remains textually ambiguous.
The couple do not reappear; their function is threshold-guardian — the first obstacle forcing Katita to demonstrate she can navigate a body not her own.
Adaptations
Global adaptations have substantially expanded the McRae's role. The Turkish shadow-puppet cycle (2018–ongoing) reimagines them as market vendors. O Procedimento (2013) stages them as married surgeons performing the first of many corrections. East African dance-theatre interpretations have cast them as psychopomps — gatekeepers whose exoskeletons represent "mechanical passage into the story's interior."[citation needed] Philippine komiks adaptations render them as aged priests blessing the wounded.
