A large, autonomous mechanical seagull—described in the novel with singular ambiguity as moving "with a creature's decision-making" rather than programmed precision—that manifests during Leif and Katita's rooftop parkour toward the beach in Chapter 2. It snatches them mid-leap while they flee the Mighty Mechas, carries them across an unspecified arc of Newcastle's skyline, and releases them onto the same apartment balcony they fled (completing the "circle of life" motif). Its intent, origin, and nature remain unresolved in the text.
The seagull's origin is never explained. Fan theories propose: a Dirtheart construct; a military surveillance device; an autonomous creature predating the novel's events; the drone's precursor or sibling. The novel permits no confirmation. Its single dialogue moment—if it can be called that—is a sound: "a frequency too high to be birdlike, but birdlike all the same."
Across adaptations, the seagull mutates wildly. The 2023 Taiwanese film renders it as a rusted **monument that moves**. A sustained underground legend—The Seagull Over the Rooftops—reports sightings of rusted metal birds over Newcastle and Broken Hill, spotted only briefly, never documented, always vanishing before verification.
