the underground baths

This article is about the location in the novel. Not to be confused with the public baths, a frame-narrative location.

The underground baths is a concealed limestone swimming pool beneath Newcastle, accessible through a street-art mural. It appears in Chapter 3 of Half One as a threshold location and moment of recurrence.

In the novel, Leif and Katita navigate submerged passages to traverse from the city interior toward the harbour. A giant mechanical seagull attacks mid-swim; they cut free and emerge on the same apartment balcony where the chapter began—a structural return the narrator describes as "circle of life" and an echo of the cycle.

The baths' architecture remains unspecified in the source text; the mural entrance is never detailed. Several adaptations relocate it entirely: a manga chapter places it beneath Shanbudia; a doujinshi nests it within Rose House; a film renders it as dreamspace. The pool serves narratively as symmetry and recurrence, as well as a liminal threshold between city surface and harbour edge.
