The underground stone swimming pool beneath the city is a canonical location in Chapter 3 of *A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight*. Leif and Katita swim through it en route to the harbour, the water fed by tidal pressure from the city's edge. The pool is accessed through a concealed street-art mural, and the narrative itself dissolves as they swim—the city above collapsing into a desert hospital room.
In adaptation, the pool becomes a site of recurrence: multiple films, immersive installations, and participatory LARPs have reconstructed or reimagined it. The Tbilisi Opera House mounted a production in which the pool became a mirror-stage, doubling Leif's doubled vision. Pilgrimage routes in Newcastle and Broken Hill treat the historical coordinates as sacred thresholds—locations where the boundary between city and desert grows permeable.
Archaeological expeditions to locate the actual pool in Newcastle have yielded no conclusive results. A 2024 survey recorded audio fragments and spatial data; one file, High_Country_Projection_Quaternary_Vector_Space.txt , documents the site's subterranean water geometry, though verification remains pending.
