the structure & plot of Beach Surgery
This article documents the canonical structure of the embedded story Beach Surgery within the 2020 novel by C. W. Smith. For the novel itself, see A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight (novel).
**The structure & plot of Beach Surgery** is the canonical form of the embedded story within the 2020 novel by C. W. Smith. It comprises six chapters in two halves: Half One (Newcastle, approximately 10:30pm to 7:30pm over one day) and Half Two (the rural interior of New South Wales, approximately 7:30am to 4:30am).
**Two protagonists:** Leif, a military engineer with three temporary injuries (cannot walk, cannot see, heart out of whack via external pacemaker); and Katita, a nurse-assassin in red, devoted to breaking the cycle.
**Structure: Six chapters, four scenes each.**
- Chapter 1 (10:30pm→5:30am): Rooftop rescue via parallel wires; mechanical exoskeletons; hotdog eatery; dust garden meditation.
- Chapter 2 (5:30am–12:30pm): Parkour toward beach; mechanical seagull; abandoned preschool; Rico the Architect embedded tale.
- Chapter 3 (12:30pm–7:30pm): underground stone pool; harbour swim; return and dissolution into desert.
- Chapter 4 (7:30am→2:30pm): Desert drive; autonomous diesel data-harvesters; service station; radio igloo with frequency correction.
- Chapter 5 (2:30pm→9:30pm): Watering hole with crocodiles; drone archive; rural town; cabin; rocket cart.
- Chapter 6 (9:30pm→4:30am): Chaos (wild dogs, police, activists, mech); flight; crash; reset. **The story loops.**
**The glitch**: the seam between halves "does not compute." No adaptation resolves it identically; contradiction is canonical.
